Causes Of Frequent Urination

by donnagumapal on June 5, 2010

Frequent urination is a fairly common medical condition that affects both men and women. People with this disorder urinate more often than usual and may even have to get up at night to empty their bladders. Most people urinate six to eight times per day and are able to sleep around eight hours without feeling the need to empty their bladders. Frequent urination is often combined with urgent urination which comes on suddenly and causes discomfort in the bladder. There are several causes of frequent urination. If you have this condition, to treat it properly, the cause must be determined.

Urinary Tract Infection

A urinary tract infection, or UTI, is one of the most common causes of frequent urination. An infection causes inflammation in your bladder that reduces its capacity to hold fluid and as fluid accumulates, discomfort increases.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a common reason that women experience frequent urination. As the developing baby crowds the available space, the bladder is able to hold smaller amounts of urine at a time. In addition, the weight of the baby presses against your bladder and triggers the need to empty it frequently.

Diabetes

Both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes are causes of frequent urination. In fact, this is one of the hallmark symptoms of diabetes. Your body increases the frequency of urination in an attempt to flush glucose out of the system. Plus, diabetics often have increased thirst that causes them to drink more and therefore need to empty the bladder more often.

Medications

Certain medications can contribute to the problem. These cause your bladder to fill with fluid more often and have the need to be emptied more frequently. Diuretics in particular are given with the goal to pull excess fluid from the tissues so it can be flushed out through the kidneys.

Prostate Problems

Prostate problems are one of the leading causes of frequent urination in men. An enlarged prostate presses against parts of the bladder so the flow of urine gets blocked. This leads to irritation of your bladder and it reacts by contracting more frequently even though it may only be holding a small amount of fluid.

Bladder Disease or Damage

Other causes of frequent urination are due to problems with the bladder itself. These could include bladder cancer and damage to the bladder from radiation therapy. Tumors growing near or in the bladder can cause irritation that triggers frequent urination or they may press on the bladder and create the sensation of needing to urinate constantly.

Nerve Damage

When the nerves supplying the bladder become impaired or damaged, this can interfere with normal bladder function. This could happen as a result of a stroke or some other neurological disease. Even nerve damage from diabetes can affect the bladder.

Drinking Excess Amounts of Fluids

Frequent urination at night may simply be due to drinking fluids close to bedtime. When you drink a lot of alcohol or any other types of beverages during the day, it will result in more frequent urination. Plus some beverages may actually act as diuretics and cause your bladder to fill up quicker.

Your doctor can perform various tests like a urinalysis or ultrasound to help determine which one of these causes of frequent urination might be responsible for your problem. Be sure to see your doctor right away if you have other symptoms too like fever, pain, vomiting, or you are passing blood.

Hi amaka,

In your case, overactive bladder is the possible problem and also diabetes. If you have any family history of diabetes then it is more likely to happen in that condtion. Over active bladder can cause frequency in urination without itch or pain. try to exercise your bladder muscles by doing kegel’s exercise or take antichilonergic drugs. If symptoms persist, consult your doctor right away.

Hi Emeka,

Frequent uriantion may be cause of different conditions. First, it is good to know the reason behind the frequency in urination. Health history and signs and symptoms you felt should be reported for us to know what is the problem and then treat it after. the treatment will vary on the type of problem you have.

HI,

Urinating up to 8 times is really annoying. Well this is because of the overactive bladder. it happens when the bladder does not work properly. Even if the bladder is not full, the urge to urinate happens. Anticholinergic drugs can help in order to relax the muscles in the bladder and also exercises like Kegel’s exercise can help in muscle relaxation.

Well what could be the problem why she goes to the bathroom frequently? Can you give me answers. She is 27 years old doesn’t have insurance. She there anything she could do. Please reply .

Hi Beatrice,

Sine you have said that she finished taking the medication for UTI, your daughter might have treated already that time before you have consulted your other doctor. But, if UTI is not the reason why frequency in urination occurs, better have urinalysis in order to know what is the real cause of the problem. There were many causes of frequent urination, hence it should be found out early to have the right kind of treatment.

Reply

donnagumapal August 10, 2011 at 5:37 pm

Hi Shirly,

The question is, are you pregnant? If yes, the frequent urination is common in pregnancy stage. This is because the uterus press the bladder that causes frequent urination. If the answer is not, and you have more symptoms other than frequent urination like pain or blood in the urine, this may be sign of serious problem that needs doctor’s attention. Having UTI during pregnancy should be treated as much as possible but with caution. Have some time observing your output as well as on other signs that indicates serious problems.

My brother is experiecing frequent urination, though the weather is extremely cool here since we are in raining season as such we are suspecting change of the weather.but in the past he as been having passage of blood after urination & he got that treated with levofloxacin & paraziquental.but he recently got marriede, and have beging to observed this frequent urination.though he do take alot of cann juice, and a Doctor as prescribed ciprofloxacin and advice him to go for fasting sugar test .yours sincerely.we will expect advice.

Reply

donnagumapal August 10, 2011 at 5:31 pm

Hi,

As what you said, your brother have been treated already with levofloxacin and preziquental which is antibiotic. Passing out blood in the urine is a sign of serious problem. the usual doctor’s order would be urinalysis in order to know what cause the problem. Since he had already been treated, recurrence may happen so it is then advice to follow doctor’s order on maintaining healthy diet and manner. If frequent urination persist even medications are taken properly, it is better to continue seeing your doctor for follow up check ups. I advised that your brother should limit drinking canned juices because it contains more sugar that is why your doctor asked you to go for fasting sugar test. Ciprofloxacin is commonly prescribed for urinary tract infection.

I urinate frequently during the day and at night to the extent that I get wet if I don’t run to the restroom or too far away although sometimes I have virginal itches and light lower abdominal pain but I take antibiotics a lot pls syptoms of what could these be and what do u think I can use. Although I was tested to have gastric ulcer I have treated it and its been a long time that I have the crisis

HI Hally,

The symptoms that you have mentioned needs doctor’s attention. It is better to have your urine check. Overactive bladder may be an issue here since you really cant hold your urine. Anticholinergic drugs can help you relax your bladder muscles. As for the itch, it is because of the bacteria cause by the frequency in urination. Do proper hygiene after you urinate. Go to your doctor and ask if the dose of your antibiotics should be increased because of the symptoms that you felt. Don’t just self medicate, it is very important to ask for the doctor’s advice first.

Since it is not diabetes, possible reasons would be overactive bladder or other causes of frequent urination. Are there any symptoms aside from frequent in urination that you felt? It would be a great help for you if you will also report the other signs and symptoms accompanying the frequent urination.

Reply

donnagumapal September 21, 2011 at 3:06 am

Hi olawumi,

Usually, urine doesn’t have bad smell, but if you are dehydrated or you took vitamins and foods like asparagus, it will be a possible to have an unusual smell. Another cause is vaginal infection, for example trichomoniasis, this brings strong, foul, fishy smell. Gardnerella, can also cause an offensive odor. Vaginal infections are easily treated with antibiotics. The sexual partner of the infected woman will need to treat with antibiotics and the use of condoms is required until the full schedule of antibiotics are finished. Observer goo hygiene after urinating because the itching may be cause by bacteria. it is recommended to consult your doctor for further test.

For this, change in lifestyle is needed especially in diet and also there were things to remember if you will diagnose with diabetes. But fyou must confirm it first, go and check your blood sugar.

Reply

donnagumapal September 26, 2011 at 1:24 pm

Hi,

I suspect that you have infection or urinary tract infection. Even if you are not thirsty make sure that you drink right amount of water in a day because it can help in flushing away the toxins in your body plus it prevents you from dehydration. Try to control your bladder by doing Kegel’s exercise. Have your urine checked and if infection is present, go to your doctor and ask for antibiotics to prevent further problems. Keep in mind also to have a good hygiene because hygiene plays an important role in urinary tract infection.

Hello,

I am a 26 year old male and I have been urinating more frequently than usual for about the past week. It is not painful, and the urine is generally clear, as I drink over 100 ounces of fluid in a typical day (water accounts for most of my fluid intake). The only two side effects I feel are some occasional slight tenderness in my groin, and sometimes going 3 times in an hour. When I am being active, like playing softball, I never feel the urge to go, however, if I sit around and think about it, the urge does occur. I typically will go no more than 14 or 15 times in a day, but the back to back urination and occasional slight tenderness have be concerned.

I also had a company wellness check about two weeks ago and the blood work indicated that I had a fasting glucose level of 99 mg/dL. I am not sure if this is a definitive evidence that I do not have diabetes. Any assistance you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Reply

donnagumapal September 26, 2011 at 1:19 pm

Hi Thomas,

First, frequent in urination may cause by several factors like infection or metabolic disorder like diabetes. But, as you mentioned about the (fbs) result or fasting blood sugar, having diabetes is eliminated in the possible causes. According to what I have researched, tenderness in the groin may be caused by infection because the lymph nodes are enlarged and that cause the tenderness. I advise you to go to the doctor and report the symptoms that you felt. He will recommend antibiotics to fight out the infection. For now, by drinking the right amount of water will be a great help in order to prevent dehydration and to flush put unwanted toxins in the body. Dont hesitate to go to doctor in order to prevent complications. It is better to cure it earlier. Hope this help! Please continue visiting the this site to get more informative tips. it will help you a lot. Good Day!

My names Jessica, and a few weeks ago I had frequent urination and excessive thirst, but it stopped after about 4 days. I did experience once or twice a quick sharp pain on my lower abdomen. And I do have diabetes in my family; my mother and father have it, both borderline diabetes. Hi,

I advise you not to think about it deeper because sometimes it happens psychologically. The more you think of it the more it happens. When at home, try to do some things like exercise and have a good rest. It’s mind over matter. Drink only the right amount of water in a day. Obesity or becoming overweight is one of the causes of frequent urination hence by decreasing your weght is a good idea. Don’t force yourself too much to exercise. Consult your doctor about this if symptoms persist.

The frequent in urination the you are experiencing may be cause by some factors like weather or any situation that you are into. Since you mentioned that you dont drink water that much, I suggest that you consume the right amount of water. This will help flush out the toxins or bacteria present in your urinary tract that may also be the cause of the irritation that you felt. Also, over active bladder maybe the cause of which for it attacks not only in the morning but also at night. It is better to have you urine check and consult it with you doctor. Try not have a good hygiene before, during and after you urinate. Drink water to prevent dehydration and that will help to flush out toxins. Get up and see your doctor.

Hi,

If the real cause of frequent urination of your father in law is diabetes, the remedy for that is also to treat diabetes. Do monitor the blood sugar level of you father in order to have the right treatment for it. Once the diabetes is manage well, frequent urination problem may also lessen or maybe stopped. But prostate problem may also be the cause because at that age, they are prone to prostate problem. So, let the doctors asses your father for them to be able to help him in the urinary problem.

Hi Onye,

the possible cause of frequent urination that you have is overactive bladder because of the very abnormal frequency in urination. I suggest that you go to your doctor to have your urine test. The number of times that you are urinating is very alarming. The best thing to do is know the root cause pf your problem in order for you to start for a remedy. Dont just sit and relax. Go to your doctor right away.

Can frequent urination be caused by anxiety? I have had frequent urination (often every hour, occasionally more) with many tests over the last year including complete metabolic profile, abdominal/pelvic CT scan, prostate exam, cystoscopy, 24-hour urine collection, brain MRI, and urodynamic study. The urodynamic study showed tightness of the bladder sphincter muscle. All of the other tests showed no problem other than slightly low blood sodium, which went back to normal. Typical urine volume in one void is 100-200 mL at most. More than one doctor has suggested it could be related to anxiety. I am a highly anxious person and am trying to get information on whether anxiety could cause high frequency of urination.

The thick fluid you are referring to maybe your semen, it becomes thicker depending on your diet especial foods rich in sugar. Another possibilities include production of gelatin-like substance to the semen because the gland does not fully function well, problems in ajeculation and maybe infection. To be able to know the real cause of this visit your doctor and report it to him. Drink plenty of water to avoid concentration of urine.

The Doctor prescribed ciprofloxacin and fluconazol and I took them but it has not stoped, he also prescribed flagil and it didnt stop. Some days I just urinate once at night while some days upto 4 times. It is more frequent in the day time now. I take enough water always and I like eating biscuits, I always fondle my genitals when I feel sex and have done this for up to 5 years, could these be the cause of the frequent urination? because I still urinate up to 6 -7times in a day and 3-4 times at night. please what should I do?

If you want a doctor’s advice you can go to your doctor and report the finding that you have. My advice is that as long as you do healthy stuffs like exercises and eating the right kind of foods continue doing it. But keep in mind that whenever frequent urination comes you can always visit your doctor and have yourself a test. For now, be healthy. stop drinking beverages rich in alcohol and caffeine or maybe you can limit it. If the problem does not come back, well and good. Continue the healthy routines that you are doing.
