Causes of Frequent Urination at Night

There are several different causes of frequent urination at night. This condition is also known as nocturia. The simple reasons may be because of drinking a large amount of fluids before bed. Women who are pregnant may also wake up several times to urinate but if you are experiencing frequent urination and you don’t believe those reasons apply to your situation it’s likely that there is some kind of underlying medical condition that needs to be checked out.

One of the common causes of frequent urination at night could be because of an overactive bladder. This situation actually involves an involuntary muscle contraction involving the bladder’s wall, which may make an individual experience a sudden and urgent need to urinate. An overactive bladder doesn’t just cause frequent urination at night though as most people will also have the same urge to urinate at any time during the day.

Another common cause of nocturia could be diabetes. People who have either type 1 or type 2 diabetes may also feel the need to urinate frequently. This happens as a result of the body trying to rid itself of any excess glucose still in the body. Those who have diabetes aren’t able to use insulin properly and others are unable to produce it. One of the most popular diabetes symptoms is a sudden unexplained loss of weight and an increase in feeling thirsty and hungry.

If you have had to urinate frequently at night or at any other time of the day and it continues, it would be in your best interest to get checked out by a doctor. You may not have an overactive bladder or diabetes but leave that diagnosis up to a doctor. Other things can result in frequent urination at night as well.
